Are You Ready to Unplug for the Holidays?

Many of us can remember a time when, believe it or not, work didn’t follow us home.

Before ubiquitous Internet connectivity and the rise of smartphones, it was much more difficult for work to follow you home. Sure, there were occasional calls and long workdays, but before any employee was just an email away, it was much less likely that work would follow you home.

Today, the story is different. It's true: smartphones, global wireless coverage, and other now-common technologies have made a positive impact on humanity in many ways. And yet, there are downsides. Work-life balance? What work-life balance?! Accenture research in 2013 found that 70% of employees say technology brings work into their personal lives, even if it does enable them to be more flexible. Not long ago, ABC News found that Americans work more than anyone in the industrialized world. Clearly, a change has taken place.

It's still unclear how much of this problem is self-inflicted (does that "urgent" email really need to be responded to at 11pm, or can it wait until the morning?), but one thing's for sure: for many employees, "unplugging" from work is much easier said than done.

With the holidays upon us, it’s worth taking a closer look at what it really takes to unplug these days. For one, it takes overcoming our mental urges to cheque our smartphones every minute and to respond to every last email as soon as possible. Again: is that email really urgent? If you’re out of the office, is there someone else who can resolve the issue for you in a reasonable amount of time? If so, the world will probably not stop turning if you wait a little extra time to respond.

Mental urges aside-when was the last time you went a day without your phone?-what's most important to really being able to unplug and unwind is preparation. If you've worked out a chain of command and figured out who's going to cover your bases when you're out on holiday, you can sleep better at night knowing issues are being resolved without you. And if you've done the work and preparation that always precedes unplugging from work, it won't be as big of a problem for you to step out.

There's one more thing you need to control when you're trying to unplug for the holidays: risk mitigation. Have you done everything in your power to ensure that nothing goes wrong when you leave? Are you confident in the systems you've left behind? If you've truly prepared, chances are you'll feel pretty good about the things you've done and people you've briefed directly. But what about those things that are seemingly out of your control? Can you count on them to continue running even after you've stepped out?
