In 2010, Social TV was named one of the 10 most important emerging technologies by the MIT Technology Review. In 2011, Wired magazine named Social TV as #3 tech trend to get traction. What is Social TV?

Social TV is a general term for technology that supports communication and social interaction in either the TV directly or with a 2nd screen and can integrate voice communication, text chat, presence and context awareness, TV recommendations, ratings, video-conferencing, and other services.

Up until a few years ago, the only distraction when watching your favorite show was your younger brother or sister wanting to change the channel. Now, with the huge adoption of smartphones and mobile technology, watching TV with your iPhone to tweet out your reactions to your favorite sports team or TV show, is an absolute must. Constantly sharing our feelings and reactions to what we see on television is becoming second nature in making the TV experience more social. Social TV is here to stay and big companies are reacting by responding to our evolving consuming habits.

On July 19, 2013, AdAge and Trendrr partnered up to bring us the most important companies in Social TV and present it to us in their updated Social-TV Ecosystem chart.

The answer to the question "Is 2013 The Year Social TV Takes Off?" is YES.

To enhance the user experience, application and service providers should include a variety of technologies including compression, acceleration, authentication, and other services.

To maximize performance and content delivery, application and service providers should partner with a carrier neutral data center who have high connectivity to eyeballs and mobile networks and who are located in key US markets. Telx has 21 data centers in the US including 4 brand new data centers in Santa Clara, Seattle, Portland, and New York/New Jersey.
