LinkedIn Prioritizes Data Centre Strategy Amid Acquisition

Over the summer, LinkedIn, the social network targeted towards professionals, was acquired by Microsoft. Now, in an effort to gain ground by way of technical insight, it is revamping its data centre strategy to align more with tech giants like Google, Facebook, and its new parent company.

At this early stage, the totality of specific changes being made is not yet clear. What is clear is a purposeful shift in strategy, and a rapid one. "We aren’t afraid to take risks,” said LinkedIn’s Eric Wendorf. As Data Centre Knowledge points out, companies like Google and Facebook have made a habit of customizing data centre designs and hardware to fit their specific needs, on a global scale.

One specific step LinkedIn has taken is to promote its open server and rack standard through an initiative called Open19. LinkedIn claims that Open19 is a simple solution for a complex problem that can be applied in any small, medium, or large sized data centre. They are actively seeking other companies to take part in the initiative.
