The Role of Hearts and Minds in Digital Transformation

For those businesses still in limbo between legacy systems and next generation IT solutions, digital transformation represents a unique opportunity to start gaining actionable insights and consequently building long-term customer value.

But, as many organizations have come to realize, putting digital transformation initiatives into place is much more complicated than simply building (or buying) and deploying next-generation IT services. Often, the biggest challenge is actually changing the mindsets of leaders and employees to  leverage the new technologies in place.

Digital transformation is not solely an IT function.
This is the first thing that everyone in the organization must understand. Sometimes there is a perception in the company that because of the word digital that digital transformation is solely the responsibility of the IT department and everyone else just sits back and watches the changes take shape. This couldn’t be further from the truth. From the top down, and in every single department, your people need to understand how and why the company is undertaking digital transformation. Having everyone on the same page is a critical first step in this process.

Mindset shift towards value creation needs to be at the fore.
Digital transformation means that employees must focus on the value creation through elimination of manual, repetitive work and leveraging insights obtained through platforms to provide additional services to customers and employees. Company leaders need to orchestrate their efforts to ensure that everyone understands their role during the digital transformation. They need to educate employees on how things will be done going forward. Don’t send a series of emails. Instead, gather the team in a large group or series of smaller groups and present the material and hold discussions. Start with the big picture ‘why’ before you dial in the specific ‘how.’

End goals must be clearly articulated.
Without a full understanding of why something is being done, there are slim chances that an entire organization will buy in to the extent they need to make the undertaking successful. Some people will inevitably think, I know I am supposed to do X, but I am not sure why so it must not be a big deal. When it comes to successful digital transformation, getting 100% participation from employees is, in fact, a huge deal. Though in the end it is up to each individual employee how they want to treat the change, clearly articulating the end goals of digital transformation will make the process much smoother and, in the end, more successful.
